Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) can be a very useful herb for relieving joint pains during the menopause.
These pains arise partly because of the hormonal changes taking place during this time of life and also because many who reach the age of 50 and beyond will have a degree of ‘wear and tear’ in their joints.
Atrosan® Devil’s Claw is a licensed herbal remedy used to relieve joint and muscle pains, back pain and other similar ‘rheumatic’ type pains in the hips, knees, neck or shoulders. It can be taken together with remedies for the menopause such as Sage tablets or soya isoflavone supplements.
What is Atrosan Devil's Claw?
This plant is native to the Southern parts of Africa. It is the tubers (or the storage roots) of the plant, measuring approximately 20cm in length, which are used medicinally. Devil’s Claw is a traditional remedy for general joint pains.
How it works
Devil’s Claw contains a group of components known as iridoids which possess anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic and pain killing properties. The anti-inflammatory action has been shown to be equivalent to that of steroids, but the plant itself does not seem to contain steroids, which may be why it does not have the adverse events associated with them.
Additional advice: No restrictions on use are known.
